Wolfeboro
became "America's first summer resort" when, in
1763, Governor Wentworth built the first known summer home
in the country on the shores of Lake Wentworth. One of the country’s most charming and historical New England towns. It’s colonial architecture and quaint village shops and boutiques make it a delightful community to visit any time of year. Wolfeboro is home to the shores of Lake Wentworth and a harbor to New Hampshire’s largest body of fresh water, Lake Winnipesaukee. Wolfeboro is delightfully scenic and welcoming all year round. In spring, the bright greenery and budding flower gardens
that compliment the historic white clapboard homesteads make
for delightful touring up and down the town’s streets. Recreational opportunities abound from boating on the crystal clear waters to cycling and hiking the local hillsides and nearby mountain ranges. If shopping and dining are favorite pastimes, Wolfeboro has fabulous eateries overlooking the harbor, and plenty of craft shops, boutiques and stores to browse. Wolfeboro is also home to numerous museums catering to World War II buffs, nature lovers, crafters and children alike. In summertime, glorious sunny days are cooled with fresh air
off the waterfront and nearby mountains. Swimming at one of
several sandy beaches, fishing, kayaking and sailing are
refreshing ways to enjoy the region. Taking a guided trip
around the Lake aboard the
famous Mount Washington is
conveniently available from Wolfeboro’s Town’s docks. Just a
short drive away is the fantastic Castle in the Clouds open
for tours.
Other fun day trips include North Conway and the
Mount Washington Valley, a gateway to popular amusement
parks and the White Mountains. Fall in Wolfeboro is a showcase of brilliant orange, red,
and yellow foliage framed by the brilliant blue lake waters
and the surrounding mountains that make New Hampshire so
famous. Cycling, horseback riding or a scenic hike are great
ways to change your venue and find some exhilarating outdoor
adventure. Winter brings sparkling white snow to the New England
lakeside village, and an entirely different scene on the
lakes as the waters ice over allowing for a plethora of
wintry activities, skating, and ice fishing to name a few.
Cross-country and alpine skiers, snowboarders, and
snowmobilers find plenty of places to slide, ride, and play
in the winter months in Wolfeboro. Half a dozen ski areas are within an hour’s drive from Wolfeboro, including nearby Gunstock across the shore of Lake Winnipesaukee – with a fantastic view that has earned the name “Lake Tahoe of New England.” Wolfeboro is also home to a tremendous calendar of events,
including spring, summer and fall craft fairs, concerts at
the Bandstand, a classic 4th of July Parade and Fireworks,
music festivals and local theatre, annual Sidewalk Sales, a
Vintage Boat Regatta, an annual Boat Auction, Golf
Tournaments, and a Classic Car Rendezvous plus a Christmas
Season Festival of Trees and a First Night New Year’s
Celebration followed by a February Winter Carnival. ![]()
